The Golden Path Part 4: Balance and Flow

When integration becomes practice

In the Golden Path Part 4, the focus shifts from selecting systems to finding balance and flow in how information and data move between them. This phase is less about adding new tools, and more about improving visibility, easing access to information, and getting the most from what is already in place.

At this point, integration stops being a design exercise. It becomes practice.

Reflecting on the Golden Path

Looking back, much of the original intent has held up well.

Students sit almost entirely in Veracross . Parents operate primarily in Schoolbox , with some interactions still occurring in Veracross. Academic staff spend most of their time in Schoolbox, dipping into Veracross mainly for daily attendance. Non academic staff work predominantly in Veracross, with limited use of Schoolbox where it adds value.

This balance has proven to be largely sound.

One area where thinking evolved was communication. Rather than choosing between a traditional newsletter in Veracross or targeted news in Schoolbox, both now play a role. Each serves a different purpose, and together they meet the needs of different audiences.

Calendars and real world complexity

The school calendar continues to be one of the hardest areas to get right.

Planning went through several revisions as understanding improved. Music tutors were a particular unknown. Their schedules needed to feed attendance in Veracross, surface in Schoolbox for students and staff, and appear in parent facing calendars.

Carey ultimately settled on using Clipboard as the primary system for music tutors. While an unusual choice, it makes sense in the context of recent Clipboard developments and the ecosystem it operates within. Attendance remains in Veracross, calendars and notifications surface in Schoolbox, and parent updates are supported through the Digistorm app.

Parent teacher interviews were deliberately set aside for now. While Veracross can support this, specialist tools like Booked from Educonnex or Paperly offer a smoother experience. This remains an area for future consideration rather than immediate change.

Medical information: clarity matters

Medical information is one area where alacrity and certainty are essential.

Consent2Go acts as the medical master, capturing structured data and pushing standardised medical information into Veracross. Medical alerts flow through to Schoolbox, and staff can access Emergency Action Plans directly from within Schoolbox when needed.

This significantly reduces the time it takes for teachers to locate critical information, particularly in high pressure situations.

Academic reports and markbooks

Academic reporting remains an evolving area.

Earlier decisions favoured Veracross for reporting due to its feature set, but Schoolbox is the primary parent portal. This raises important questions around where reports should live, how markbooks are managed, and how data flows between systems.

The focus now is ensuring practice aligns with intent, without compromising accuracy, care, or trust.

Reducing login friction

As the ecosystem grows, so does the risk of login fatigue.

Studentnet® plays a key role in simplifying access for parents, connecting them to Schoolbox, the Veracross parent portal, and the Digistorm school app. When this works well, parents do not think about identity systems at all. They simply get where they need to go.

The path continues

Some areas are settled. Others are still evolving, like a river finding the ocean.

Schools are not static environments. They shift and adapt over time, finding their way forward like a river meeting the ocean.

The work is no longer about choosing the “right” system. It is about understanding where each system belongs, and allowing information to move with purpose.

The Golden Path continues. (queue 70's traveling music)
